Faculty Club Meeting Room (2000-2021)

The Scripps Research Institute, La Jolla

One of our most challenging and prestigious projects was the redesign of the Faculty Club Meeting Room at the world-renowned Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla. This facility, housed in a 1970s Knotted Pine building, needed to be transformed into a comfortable and inspiring meeting space for the world’s most distinguished scientists, including 17 Nobel Laureates.

Design Challenge

The primary challenge was to meet the high expectations of scientists accustomed to the refined environments of top institutions like Oxford University, Cambridge University, Harvard, and MIT. The goal was to create a space that combined Old World elegance with modern comfort, providing a setting where the brightest minds could gather, think, and innovate.

Design Exceution

We sourced antiques from across California, including English 18th-19th century Windsor chairs, Flemish leather 18th-century screens, French 18th-century secretaries, and Spanish 17th-18th century knobby square tapered end tables. The room was adorned with decorative prints and lithographs, ensuring a blend of historical aesthetics with the comfort of modern seating.

Project Legacy

Although the Faculty Club room was disassembled in 2023 to make way for a new science center, the work we did played a significant role in creating an environment that fostered groundbreaking research. The antiques were distributed among faculty members, preserving the legacy of our design.

Budget Truck Rental Facility, San Diego

Another notable project was the interior design for a Budget Truck Rental facility in San Diego, owned by a Boston-based couple. The aim was to create a tranquil and peaceful environment amidst the hustle and bustle of daily operations.

We incorporated East Coast elements, such as framed photographs of lighthouses and paintings of daisies, to evoke a sense of calm and stability. Modern black lacquered chairs were added for client comfort, creating a serene waiting area that contrasted with the stress of the operational environment.
